the flu

It's official folks. We have the flu. After Jane woke up with a high temp yesterday, I took her in and they tested her for the flu. She tested positive. I'm glad they can test for that, because it kept her from needing to be put on antibiotics unnecessarily and it helps to be prepared for what could happen next. Anyway, this morning the rest of us are starting to feel it coming on, and although I've never had mastitis, I think I'm beginning to get it too. Yuck. Oh, well. This is going to be some great mom story someday when I'm old and gray and I tell the same story over and over again. "Remember when we all had the flu and I had mastitis..."

Maybe not though--from what I hear, most moms don't remember the bad memories, at least not all of them.

If you feel mastitis coming on try to drink tons of water and nurse, nurse, nurse! When I started getting it I was ordered to lay in bed for a day although that is unrealistic when you have another child running around the house but resting as much as possible will help your body fight it. If its mastitis it will be obvious, your temp will go up quickly and your body will ache and you'll have the chills. It's unmistable and not fun (sorry I don't mean to be a downer). I know I don't know you but I'll be saying a little prayer for your family today! :) Hopefully you're just coming down with the flu. :)

and.... if it is mastitis call your OB and get some antibiotics RIGHT AWAY!

I hope you are already feeling better.

Hang in there. I know it is tough to have sick kids and be sick yourself. Don't be too vain (not that you are vain, I only know how I am myself) to ask for help if and when you get overwhelmed!

Karen, I have to second that. . .if you suspect mastitis, get antibiotics ASAP. There are only a couple of times in my life when I have been as miserable as I was with mastitis. I personally would rather take antibiotics and end up not really needing them than risk having mastitis on top of the fam having flu. Trust me. . .i know what I'm talking about!
