A literary note from the land of runny noses

One of the ways I have been surviving all of this snot (not mine, the kids' snot and lots of it), has been to read The Samurai, by Shusaku Endo. Sorry I don't know how to underline or italicize yet. I mean no disrespect. What a great book. I'm really fascinated by it. One unexpected pleasure has been that Matt and I have connected over it, due to his background with things Japanese. We've never really had a whole lot of hobbies in common so it's really refreshing to find something we both enjoy doing, even if it's just discussing Japan in the 1600s.

I know this picture doesn't relate to what I just wrote, but I had to post it anyway. We made crowns yesterday and Jane is really enjoying wearing hers. Hail Queen Janie.

Like Lady Jane Grey! Except your Jane will not be fighting Catholicism, imprisioned in the Tower of London and beheaded for being a protestant.

I love making crowns for birthdays. Dunno how it happened but josiah has had a "hat" for each birthday so far. A crown for 1, a cowboy hat with a foam 2 stapled on, and a felt hat we made at the art museum for his 3rd. Who knew decorating your kids was more fun than decorating the cake?
