Dana's art

Today, Dana made some major changes in his style as a toddler artist. I'm pretty excited. Even though he's 3 1/2, he usually spends the bulk of his drawing time attacking the construction paper, mostly just to bang his markers or crayons into oblivion. He tested out as many colors as he could find on his paper, sometimes making big spirals. That's not to say there's anything wrong with that. It's just that he hadn't done anything new or more thoughtful since he was like 18 months old. Today, he made some major strides. He spent time drawing with a purpose in mind and he loved what he drew. When he finished his first picture, his face lit up. He was so proud. I was too, especially because I had kept my mouth shut through the entire process and he did the whole thing without any of my influence.

The yellow one is from today, but the blue one is from last week. In the yellow one, he drew himself. This is his first attempt to draw someone at all and he made a big point of telling me that it was a "really big Dana, bigger than the other ones". I also included the blue one, but he didn't really have anything to say about it. That's okay though. I love them both.

Dana's blue drawing looks like the conquistador barely visable in his helmet. A budding artist?
Best regards

Wow, the picture of Dana has a head AND a body! That is advanced! Gavin started drawing things recently- like Dana, it was all of the sudden, he sat down and made a spider (with about 29 legs) and then started on people. He gave me a picture of papa wrestling, mama dancing and Gavin spinning. I was so excited about this because through art he has a whole new way to express himself. Like everything they do it is so real and honest- I'm glad he had us doing such happy things and that he didn't draw mama running around the kitchen. Erin

I do love it Karen! I'm waiting for Josiah to get more into the subject matter of drawing and this post gives me hope that he's right on the cusp of getting it. I guess it's the one thing I feel I'm pressuring him on, pretty silly, but ya know.

Good Job Dana! Keep it up! There's a blog I read where he posts every thursday a drawing of his daughter's complete with description! It's fun.

Karen, that is very impressive artwork! In art development, most kids Dana's age draw "tadpole" people--just heads with legs and arms sticking out of them. He's advanced!

I love this Karen! Kid art is so amazing. The blue one is definitely intriguing. I know he didn't mean it as much, but there's a definite face, shoulder and neck.
