advice wanted: canning and teething
1) If you are an experienced canner, what kind of canning equipment would you suggest? My great aunt, who cans everything from venison to preserves, suggested a pressure cooker canner, but I don't know what kind to get (used vs. new, brand names to look for, or even what type). Any suggestions?
2) Clara is not weathering teething very well at all. My other two kids were fussy when they cut their teeth and I had to give them tylenol or ibuprofen regularly, but Clara is completely out of sorts at night. I think it's been been three weeks since she slept 8 hours straight. Last night she was up every hour to two hours all night long. I really feel like I'm starting to lose it. How long can you sacrifice REM sleep, without going stark raving mad? We really are doing okay during the day. I don't want to throw her up against the wall or anything, but outside of what I'm already doing (ibuprofen every 4-6 hours, orajel, and lots of love and attention) I am clueless. Should I just wait it out, or is there something else I could do? Please let me know if you have any suggestions at all, even weirdo ones. I'll try just about anything.

We have several Mormons in our neighborhood (there's a church down the road actually). Pam has met a couple of the moms on some play dates. We were just talking last night that apparently Mormons are supposed to stock a year's worth of food in case of a disaster. Hence, they do a lot of canning! I could ask Pam or Kelli to inquire.

Thanks. That would be very helpful.

concerning teething--here's what we did with our first and it worked. and yes, it was kind of by accident. who knows if it will work with our soon-to-be-teething little one.
step 1: toss bagels in the freezer.
step 2: once frozen through and through, grab a bagel and pull off a decent-sized piece.
step 3: give to crying baby.
obviously, this is for kids who are eating solids, which i assume your teether is, and it may not be best for hte middle of the night, but who knows.
ooh--another idea...just thought of it. try to find a way to fill a pacifier up w/ water (if you use pacifiers), toss it in the freezer, and give at appropriate times. kind of like a teething ring, only easier to use b/c the kid doesn't have to hold it.

Thanks for the advice. I have actually heard the same thing from someone else a long time ago, but I had forgotten about it. I will try it. She's just started to eat things like cheerios, so I think she'd be able to handle it if I gave her a a pretty sizable piece to gnaw on.

CHAMOMILE
Newton's Teething & Colic homeopathic pellets worked well for Ike & Gid. http://www.organix.net/organix/newtonkids.htm

I second the teething tabs Lynn mentioned. I hesitate not at all to slip a few into the mouth! They can get messy when baby is wiggling around bc they dissolve really quick, but I use them with Tylenol if necessary. They calm them down so you can nurse them!

Oh, I just checked Lynn's link, I use Hyland Teething Tabs. They come in a pink and blue bottle.

I actually just bought the Hyland Teething Tabs this week. We're on day 3 of trying them out, but I haven't noticed much of a difference. She has a mild intermitant rash on her shoulders and forehead now too. Am I crazy or is something else going on? She's absolutely incosolable at night. She's miserable, until she wakes us up at the crack of dawn, for the last time, and then she's all smiles until about an hour after bedtime again. Ugh. It's really starting to be almost funny, b/c most people say she's the happiest baby they've ever seen, when they meet her (during daylight of course).
