a student again
So last night was my first Inklings class at Covenant. I felt very out of place as the only alumna present, aside from Dr. Ralston herself. The hardest part about this class will be that we are required to do group work for two assignments. As someone with a demanding schedule and little opportunity to travel to the campus during the day, this will be really tricky. I'm going to try to make it work, but I'm having flashbacks to elementary school where I was the last oddball kid to be picked by either team captain. I feel like I should be past that by now, but here I am, feeling that way anyway.
This week's homework is to read Lewis' book Of Other Worlds, a short essay by George MacDonald from A Dish of Orts (www.ev90481.dial.pipex.com/fantastic_imagination.htm) and a legthy esssay by Tolkien called "On Fairy-Stories" from The Tolkien Reader. After each reading assignment I turn in a brief response to the reading (15 total).
What I'm most excited about is that the class was supposed to meet from 7-9:45, but it's now going to end at 9 instead. This is to allow for additional meetings on separate nights to show films, and once, to read The Screwtape Letters aloud as a class. We are required to attend three of these alternate nights, but I would love to attend as many as I can without neglecting the fam. We'll see. I'm still not sure how I will balance my reading and writing with home life.

being in class will work wonders for your self-esteem and you'll also realize that the kids (and Matt/with Matt) wont spiral into oblivion. they turn out aok. have fun! look forward to the escape!

I'm so jealous. I wish I could afford it right now. Though, I will say that I went back to school when E was Jane's age and Sam was Clara's, and it was pretty tough around paper/exam time. But I'm still envious!

Hi, Karen. I can identify w/being the odd ball student in class. It doesn't take long and that will recede. Soon you will be just another student exploring the Inklings. What a wonderful thing!
